There are more than one million Americans who have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 20 percent of all people who have HIV are unaware that they have the virus. Though standard antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved both the quality of life and life expectancy of those with the virus, HIV/AIDS remains a complex phenomenon and minimizing further spread of the disease remains a high priority of public health professionals.
